At First Glance – Gurren Lagann

Note: There are spoilers for the first episode of the anime in question in this article. You have been warned.

Welcome back folks. As a quick reminder for those who are new or have forgotten, the idea of these “At First Glance” things is that I watch the first episode of an anime I’ve never seen and give my thoughts on it. Simple, right? With that out of the way, let’s get down to business.

Gurren Lagann

Gurren Lagann

Ah yes, another anime that I’ve heard of quite a lot but just never gotten around to watching until now. Fun fact, I actually flat out considered buying this anime on a whim a while ago. I didn’t, but I considered it.

As I don’t really want to know where the show is going from here (and I mean that in a good way), the briefest summary I can give is that Gurren Lagann follows the adventures of Simon (pronounced “see-mon”) Kamina and Yoko on their adventures on the surface world of their home planet…and possibly beyond for all I know. The first episode specifically introduces us to the three, and details the events that lead to Simon & Kamina reaching the surface; having lived their lives entirely (or almost entirely in Kamina’s case) underground in Giha village, their hometown.

Considering that this anime was made by the same team (albeit not the same actual studio) that made Kill La Kill, I must admit I was expecting something much more over-the-top than this ended up being. Don’t get me wrong, it is still  ridiculous and over-the-top, but in a much more subdued way than the in-your-face Kill La Kill is. I must admit I was actually kind of glad when I realised that was the case, rather than let down. I mean, it could always get crazier from here, and I wouldn’t doubt it, but this first episode was fairly subdued in it’s over-the-top aspects.

As far as the characters go, I feel like out the main three there isn’t a character I’ll
end up hating. At least it doesn’t feel that way going by this one episode. Simon is
the typical meek character that you know will have some kind of arc where he
gains some confidence. Kamina is the cocky, overconfident cheerleader who just
charges into everything blindly, and Yoko is the strong, badass young woman who probably doesn’t take shit from anyone. That and probably has the most actual combat experience of the three. Hell I assume she’s the only one with ANY combat experience. It’s a varied enough group to work and I’m definitely looking forward to seeing what kind of adventures they have.

One thing I kind of like is that Simon just sort of gets dragged into all this mess. He seemed fairly content with his life, even if he clearly wishes for a better one. But even then he doesn’t really seem to yearn to leave his hometown or anything. Even when they finally do end up on the surface world at the end, it’s partially just a result of fighting with the creature that falls through the “ceiling” into their hometown rather than them actively trying to get there.

Another thing I like is that even though Kamina can be a bit of an arsehole, it’s at least the loveable kind of arsehole right now, so his antics come off more as being funny than wanting someone to strangle him. Even when he hits on Yoko, it’s clear if she wanted him to shut up she could do it fairly easily. Hell, Yoko is clearly not a submissive or passive woman at all. She doesn’t even mind when Simon ends up on top of her by accident due to their little mech crashing to the ground (possibly because he doesn’t try to grope her or she finds his embarrassment to be cute), and then buries his head in her chest when she realises there are giant monsters looming over them.

All-in-all I’m definitely looking forward to watching more of the show, and am also glad I finally gave this show a try, which means the streak remains unbroken for now. If you’re into mech-based anime or general action-adventure anime I’d say give this one a chance if you’re not already a fan. The series is 27 episodes long and it’s available in both subbed and dubbed formats for those who care. Hell, like some anime Gurren Lagann even has two movies that condense the events of the series down into movie form if you can’t get enough of it.

And that about covers it I think. f anyone has any suggestions for anime I should watch for this in the future, give me a shout and I’ll put it on my list. If it’s already on my list, I’ll bump it up in priority. However if I’ve already watched it then I’m obviously going to have to decline. I’ll see you guys next time with my thoughts on the first episode of the anime series “K-On!”.

Getting (more) into Horror Games

Lately I’ve been watching a lot of lets plays by the youtuber Markiplier. If you have never seen any of his stuff here are a couple videos I would recommend:

Five Nights at Freddy’s reaction video

Once Change lets play

Surgeon Simulator 2013

Markiplier has a lot of lets plays for horror games, and I was first introduced to him by Grant when I started getting interested in Five Nights at Freddy’s, but was too much of a wimp to actually play the games. As much as I love video games I’ve found it hard to be able and sit down and play anything substantial for a while. Of course there was my Animal Crossing addiction but…those were dark times.

Work has been a drag lately, so I turn to Markiplier to entertain me! I’ve watched a good number of his videos over the past couple weeks, but there are a few major things I’ve really enjoyed. Also, there’s a lot about the experience of horror that Mark (can I call you Mark?) has made me think about!

This is not the first time in my life I’ve been interested in horror/survival horror games. Games like Silent Hill 3 and Dead Space are a huge staple of my slightly younger years, and also my relationship with my brother. As I said, I am a bit of a wuss! I have a hard time actually playing the games myself, but I love to watch other people play them. Markiplier is especially fun to watch, in my opinion. Some people think he’s too…noisy, but I find him funny the vast majority of the time. He isn’t afraid to show that he’s scared, or upset, or frustrated. It’s really hard for me to watch the Surgeon Simulator 2013 videos because I just laugh way too much to be acceptable in my office.

Some of my favorite games recently are Five Nights at Freddy’s, the Deep Sleep series, amnesia, and Fatal Frame. The Deep Sleep games especially have stuck in my mind. The story was very interesting and there’s still a good amount of mystery surrounding the whole story. Markiplier has lets plays of all those games if you’re interested and I believe they’re free to play also.

When I watch people like Markiplier play horror games, it’s difficult to find it as scary as I would if I were playing myself. It kind of makes any horror game into…a dark comedy. Yes, the jump scares are still scary. Yes, I still have an irrational fear of animatronic bears. However, along with the memories of the terror are memories of humor. So all in all I find it easier to experience.

This has had an interesting affect on my horror movie watching habits. Usually I don’t like to watch scary movies, but recently that’s all I’ve wanted to watch . My internal dialogue has shifted. Instead of just feeling overwhelmed and scared, I find myself imagining how Markiplier might respond and laughing at the most horrifying of things!

What’s your opinion of horror in popular media? It’s something I find a lot of people really love or really hate. Also, let me know if there are any games you recommend to play, or watch lets plays for. Thanks for reading!

You’re Awesome.

NetworkNews Update (4/4/14)

Hello Viewers,

It’s time for another NetworkNews Update.  There’s some really cool news this time and some uneventful stuff, so let’s get this underway.

Hiatus Set End-Date?

First thing’s first, the show will be coming back by the end of next month.  That is pretty much a sure thing.  At the time of my writing this, I am uncertain of whether the show will maintain its weekly format or will have to change to biweekly/monthly.  I can say, with certainty, that the first few reviews back are going to be multi-part episodes, released across several days instead of all at once.  This is because these episodes were done in a…”unique” way.  Rather than reviewing one or two issues a title, I knocked out an entire volume.  While I hesitate to say that I won’t be doing that again, I will say that it’s something that won’t happen often, as the preparation required to get that type of thing ready for shooting is a nightmare.

The schedule is remaining unchanged.

-Red Hood & The Outlaws vol. 1

-Teen Titans vol. 1

-Super-Girl vol. 1

-Wonder Woman vol. 1

Following this series of New 52 reviews, I will be taking a break from the New 52 to do some backtracking.  I intend to re-review a number of comics that I’d reviewed in the past, but better.  I won’t disclose those here, but I haven’t really reviewed that many so your odds of guessing the right ones are high.

Now let’s talk about the really fun news.  My room, AKA, my “set”, is done.  Everything is set up in my room the way I want it.  All I have to do is put up a couple posters that will be here in the mail within the next week.  I also have all of the props I need.

More cool stuff coming for the show includes a new, original theme song, a logo for the show, a general title card, and a number of other new features that will hopefully make the show seem more tightly knit.  One addition that I’ll be contributing on my own is the addition of a sort of “Comic Segment” in the show.  This is basically a way to handle certain storyline bits without having to worry about costumes and props and things.  I don’t have any money to pay anyone else to draw them, so I’ll have to do that myself.

Call to Assist

Next I want to mention the official NNTV Patreon account.  I’d really appreciate it if you guys would help support what I do by sharing the account with others and contributing, yourselves.  It’s only a dollar a month (though you can donate whatever amount you want) and if I can get a few regular patrons, I should be able to improve the show even further.  And I am working on the prizes and benefits of donations.  Presently I am working on have T-Shirts and other paraphernalia made, so that’s something to look forward to.  I’ll also look into doing exclusive live chats and video prizes, as well as some other cool stuff, like maybe a Toonified version of you or something.  Contact me if you have any idea what you guys might want in return for your help with donations.

You can find that page at:

There anything in particular that you guys would like to see me do v-logs on?  Here’s a list of what I already have planned for the foreseeable future.

-Kim Possible

-My Life as a Teenage Robot

-Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes

-The Spectacular Spider-Man

-Batman: Mask of the Phantasm

-Pokemon (Indigo League – Johto League)

The only Con that I may be able to attend in the near future is Mythicon, right here in Orlando.  September 19-21.  I can’t go to any cons out of state, for fairly obvious reasons.

New Content

This is something of an experiment, but if anyone would be interested in seeing written original content, then please let me know.  I am, after all, a writer first.  I am working on a few comics, but that’s not quite the same…and they take longer…a lot longer.

I believe that’s about the long and short of everything.  Don’t forget to follow my blog and follow me on Twitter.  Like ThatRuled on Facebook, of course.  Like and share our content and, as always, take care.
