The Amazing Spider-Man 2


Hello Folks,

If you haven’t seen the Amazing Spider-Man 2 by now, then I’m going to start out by saying I would recommend doing that before reading too far into this review.  After a brief summary of my opinion, I’m going to get into seriously heavy spoilers.  If you don’t want that, stop at the spoiler warning.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is, of course, the second in the new Spider-Man franchise of movies.  In it, Peter is just graduating and is now faced with relationship issues as well as further exploring the secrets hidden by his father, the late Richard Parker.  He also finds himself faced with a new threat in the form of the mentally unstable super villain, Electro, all while reconnecting with a childhood friend, Harry Osborn.

The film is decidedly simple, focusing more on the personal life of Peter Parker than on the plot involving the villain of the film.  I maintain that Andrew Garfield is PERFECTLY cast as Peter Parker and Spider-Man.  Meanwhile, Emma Stone is a solid Gwen Stacy.  Liberties taken by the franchise don’t generally hurt the film, at least not any more than the liberties taken by the first movie did.  The relationship element of this movie is done superbly and I do like this change of pace from the typical superhero movie, in which they usually focus more on the heroics.  If this movie suffers from anything at all, it’s choppy editing, and I feel as though that has nothing to do with Webb, but rather because Sony has no idea what they’re doing.  Regardless of that, this film is, in my mind, superior to the first one in many ways.  The advancement of character is done very well.  The jokes and light moments are a breath of fresh air.  Some did complain that the movie has difficulty deciding its tone.  However, that’s been a bit of a constant in Spider-Man stories for ages.  An arc in the comics will go through multiple tones, largely based on the events in it.  One movie does not equal one comic.  More often than not, a movie will be equal to several comics.  This is no exception.  I do have one major issue with this movie around the last 10 to 15 minutes.  But that aside, it’s a solid movie and I’d advocate checking it out.


SPOILER ALERT: From This Point On, Heavy Spoilers


I do think that it is interesting that while Spider-Man is a PART of the villain motivations in this franchise, he isn’t the core goal.  The Lizard wanted to  turn the rest of the world (or at least Manhattan) into lizard-people like him.  Electro has his own plans.  However, when Spider-Man becomes involved, he becomes determined to fry him.  Electro’s primary motivation is a desire to be noticed.  In the beginning we can see that he idolizes Spider-Man and when Spider-Man actually speaks to him, he seems to be on top of the world, at least in his own mind.  However, after the accident that turns him into a being of living electricity, an underlying instability is brought out and he progressively becomes more and more of a monster.  He ultimately plans to kill the power in the entire city so people will finally show him the respect he is due.  I feel as if this makes Electro a much more sympathetic character than Kurt Conners from the previous film.  You know he isn’t a bad person, but he is continually pushed around and treated like a nobody, so eventually he was pushed too far and snapped.  I like that you can hear voices in his head during his first scene as Electro.  And his character theme is very subtle but creeps up on you, as if you can feel his anger building up.

This scene is notable to me because it showcases that Spider-Man isn’t reserved to just punching away the problems.  He can see that (at least initially) Max doesn’t mean anyone any trouble.  He’s trying to talk him down, so to speak.  However, the cops in the Marvel Universe, as we’ve all discussed before, are complete and total idiots.

The on-off relationship thing was…a tad annoying.  The element of their relationship was great, I dare even say adorable.  Andrew and Emma have superb chemistry.  However, I feel they didn’t need the on-off thing to sell it.  And based upon what happens in the end, I think that it would have served the film better if they’d been in the relationship the entire time and instead made the whole of the issue about Gwen leaving for college soon (though I was a bit perplexed by where in the heck their summer went unless this movie takes place over the course of months).

I also like that, for once, a villain doesn’t discover his secret identity (not that Electro would know who he was anyway). It just gets boring after a while that every villain discovers who he is behind the mask.  It works for characters like Green Goblin and Venom, both of which have actual connections to Peter.  But characters like Doctor Octopus and Sandman…not so much.

Now let’s talk about Harry.  I think that this element of Harry being an old friend that went away but comes back is a pretty good story element.  The arc of him knocking on death’s door is equally good.  He’s been alone for his entire life and now that he’s threatened with this terrible situation, he’s looking to anyone he can for help, but when they can’t, it’s like being left alone (and for dead) all over again.  I think I still would have preferred it if they played Harry in the classic sense, however, of him being this guy who just wants his father’s approval.  Sadly, that isn’t in this film (and was barely used in the Raimi films, so I guess we’re never going to get Harry done proper).  In this film, Norman Osborn dies after maybe five minutes of screen time.  I kid you not, that is all he gets.  We’ll talk about the Green Goblin in a bit.

Something else I want to bring attention is the abundance of Easter Eggs in this film.  While I can appreciate them and got them, there was one that I wasn’t a fan of.  They turned one awesome supporting character, Dr. Kafka, into a German male scientist whose only role is to torture Electro.  Did I mention that the original Dr. Kafka is actually based on a real person?  Yup.  Her creator based Kafka on a real-life doctor of his as a way of immortalizing her as a show of gratitude.  This is what they did to the characters as a result.  Oh, and on a tangent, here, they also killed Kafka off in the Superior Spider-Man series…so yeah, screw the guys making these decisions.  And, by the way, the woman they got to play Black Cat?  She’s in a business suit the entire time, so it may be that, but NO.  *Ahem* Back to the review.

The element of Peter researching the work of his parents was interesting and intriguing, but for some reason I feel that it didn’t quite pay off in the way that I wanted it to.  The long and short of it is that Peter’s father used his own blood to create the super spiders, just so no one could ever duplicate his work.  After discovering some illegal dealings at Oscorp, he decided to terminate his affiliation with them and take his work with him.  The result is ultimately the plane crash that orphans young Peter.  I feel that the payoff was rather lackluster compared to the expectations you have after they built this up for two whole movies.  It isn’t bad.  It’s just not quite satisfactory in my eyes.

Some have said that the idea that Peter has some sort of destiny is annoying to them, but, really, he doesn’t.  Peter’s direct involvement in all of this is still a complete and total accident.  He isn’t the key to some riddle.  He isn’t some prodigal son and was never MEANT to go down this path.  It just happened.  So props to them for not making it seem like all of this was intended for him.

Now let’s just talk about that last 30 minutes.  It is, of course, the big fight scene.  Spider-Man is battling Electro at this Oscorp power grid where Electro means to kill the power, causing a city-wide blackout.  Something that’s very off-putting, at least to me, is that it’s heavily implied that Spider-Man and Gwen effectively kill the guy.  I’m pretty sure he isn’t truly dead.  However, many people seem to believe he’s gone for good.  I doubt this is the case.  Electro is notorious for making it look like he’s dead when he isn’t.  He could have just been temporarily dispersed.

After that we get the introduction to Harry as, DUN DUN DUN, the Green Goblin.  Now I’ll start by saying that oh my GOD did Dehaan do a good job capturing the tone of a very much insane and unstable, yet emotive Goblin.  Harry, as the Goblin, has never been quite as well put together as his father was.  So that’s why I’m not bothered that this Goblin wasn’t the whimsically cold, confident, and cunning psychopath that is Norman Osborn (if you want to see what I view as the perfect Green Goblin, then see the Spectacular Spider-Man cartoon).  HOWEVER, there is one enormous problem, here.  Green Goblin is in this movie for all of ten minutes…MAYBE.

Why? Solely so he can kill Gwen Stacy…that’s it.  That is all.  The fight scene is cool, but too short and too anticlimactic.  Spider-Man defeats him way too easily for his presence to really be justified.

This leads me to the actual moment of Gwen’s death.  It was inevitable, people.  And while the handling of her death was BRILLIANT…the lead-up to it was notably lackluster.  The scene following her death is Peter reflecting on his failure to save her life…and that is a masterfully done bit.

Now, I’ve seen people state that they would have preferred the movie end there, but…frankly I’m perfectly okay with it either way.  I’m inclined to preferring it end on a positive note, just because I’m like that, but I can see ways for it to work if it had ended on her death the way they were saying.  Like when the Sinister Six comes together to kill Spider-Man, they do so and try to lure Spider-Man out after he’s been gone a while, still mourning and depressed.

But back to her actual Death.  This is going to be the make or break point for people watching the movie.  That’s just going to be the case for a looot of people.  It didn’t really break it for me.  I still like the film.  However, it was a glaring distraction.

If you would care to hear out my recommendation, I think that this film should have taken place over the course of their summer (as I…think it did), but either made the issue about Gwen conflicted about whether or not to leave New York for a college opportunity in England.  Towards the end, she could help Peter stop Electro, but Peter tells her that, whatever her choice, he’ll follow her in the end (as he does).  STOP at that point.  Done.  Just tease Green Goblin and that can be the end.

THEN, when Green Goblin has assembled the Sinister Six, have Gwen and Peter battle them throughout the whole movie, without pushing their relationship to the foreground.  Perhaps Peter is trying to find other ways of helping pay rent or some OTHER mundanity of his life.  There’s more to his struggles than just trying to maintain a love life, you know.  Have it take place only shortly after the events of this film.  Then, towards the end, it all comes down to the classic fight.  It’s Spider-Man versus the Green Goblin, one on one.  In THAT fight is where the Goblin can execute the infamous scene of throwing her over the side of the bridge or whatever he’s going to do.  THAT’s when her death can be implemented.  The issue here is that her death was far too abrupt.  And as a result, we all know they’re probably going to shoehorn Mary Jane into the next movie as a love interest.  Not only that, but their inclusion of Felicia (Seriously? SERIOUSLY?!) probably means we’re going to (kind of) get Black Cat…eventually.  Now, there are two more movies planned.  With that being the case, it is possible that Mary Jane could be introduced in the second film, but not actively resigned to the role of love interest until the 4th one.  I’d be fine with that.

And now for my prediction on the Sinister Six.

Obviously, we’re going to have Green Goblin and Rhino.  We also got to see the Doctor Octopus arms and the Vulture Wings.  I think we even get a glimpse of the symbiote, but I HOPE Venom isn’t a part of this.  If Venom’s going to be in another movie, I want him to be the ONLY villain in it.  Anyway, that aside, I think we may also end up with possibly getting Electro back, but if he is dead, then I’ll assume we can get maybe Mysterio, Shocker, Kraven, there are a lot to choose from, but I’m leaning towards Kraven and Shocker.  As much as I’d love to see Mysterio, I don’t think they’ll ever get around to that one.

Overall, I’d say that I’ve seen places this franchise could go, probably should have gone, and places I WANT it to go.  While it isn’t perfect, it is, at least to me, far better than the Raimi movies.  I feel, like many others, that the sloppiness inherent is less Webb’s doing, and more Sony’s doing.  A LOT of things seem to end up chopped out of these films, some of which probably should have been there, such as the scene from the last film, showing Kurt with his family.

In the end, I would certainly recommend giving this film a watch, if only to help you decide what kind of Spider-Man fan you are (if at all).  But I also highly recommend watching the Spectacular Spider-Man cartoon (which is several dozen times better than anything this franchise can and will produce) and reading a few Spider-Man comics, preferably those prior to Civil War.  Or, if you want a fresh start, the new Amazing Spider-Man series is off to a pretty cool start.

Marvel & DC Beware

Before I begin to venture into fan rage, I feel I should note the following:

“Dark & Gritty”, “Edgy”, “Did What No One Else Dared To Do”, “Modern”, “Realistic”…these are the traits that present-day media and entertainment seem hard-pressed to sell us and the traits that the general public are quite obviously obsessed with.  From that I feel I should warn you that if you are close-minded and one of those people, I suggest you leave this article…ASAP.  I am a Traditionalist and a Surrealist.  As for “Dark & Gritty”, “Edgy”, and “Doing What No One Else Dares To Do”, I don’t give a crap as long as what I am reading/watching is good.  With that said, you’ve been warned.

Let’s start with DC.  Why?  Because that section is bound to be shorter.  DC went and rebooted their entire mainstream universe…not that they have more than one universe anymore.  New 52 sells like hotcakes and many of the titles under it are well written, blah blah blah.  Am I angry at this reboot?  Frankly, yes but, at the same time, I’m more angry at the execution than the decision.  Rebooting everything so that superheroes are just turning up, wiping clean DECADES of RICH continuity…yes…yes I am quite miffed.

Okay…now Marvel.  Or should I say Marvel NOW.  Oh yes, I’m going there.  But before we talk about Marvel NOW let’s talk about Marvel’s Ultimate Universe.  I, for one, can honestly say that I don’t like the Ultimate Universe.  In fact, I absolutely LOATHE it.  Why?  It’s not because it tries to be more modern or more realistic…it’s because the writing in it has just come across as STUPID or LAZY more times than I can count.  Here I will provide two prime examples.  the first Example, the one I am LEAST angry at, is Ultimatum.  My god…this was terrible.  It’s almost as if the entire purpose of the event was to kill off a crap ton of characters.  Oh yeah.  IT WAS.  But not only that.  After it was released, guess what?  THEY COMPLETELY IGNORE IT.  All that’s ever brought up about it again (On the surface, anyway) is the city being flooded.  None of the deaths served any purpose other than killing the characters to make room for replacement later.  Most of the deaths didn’t even have a story purpose.  This, my friends, is STUPID writing.  Now let’s jump to LAZY writing.  Enter Ultimate Spider-Man.  Yeah.  I’m going there too.  Miles Morales.  The “New” Spider-Man of the Ultimate Uni- screw it, he’s a generic carbon copy of the first one.  There’s very little about him that’s innovative and he’s only getting a free pass because he’s black.  I will remind the black demographic of comic readers that anyone who says “There aren’t enough black characters in comics” is just being an idiot.  You want to see the mass majority of the heroes be black.  A bit of knowledge for you.  The majority of the North American Population happens to NOT be Black.  Further more: Luke Cage, Black Panther, Storm, Falcon, Green Lantern (John Stewart), Vixen, Firestorm, Cyborg, Bumblebee, Black Goliath, Static Shock, Black Lightning, Patriot, this is a list of Black Characters and comics and it only goes on from there.  So, in other words, zip it about “There aren’t any black characters in comics!”

So let’s head back to Marvel NOW.  Specifically the “Superior Spider-Man”.  Yep.  They most definitely had the balls.  Not only are they replacing Pete, but they also have the AUDACITY to call the new one “Superior”.  I CALL BULL CRAP.  When this one endures for 50+ years, THEN you get to make that claim.  Until then, he doesn’t even DESERVE an adjective.

So many of you may be saying “But Inkritic, it’s really time to move on.  Marvel wants to do something new.  Maybe you should just give it a chance.”  The only thing keeping me from flat out calling you an idiot is my belief that everyone is entitled to their opinion.  So just as you THINK it is time to move on, I THINK that “Moving On” is probably the dumbest thing in the world.  But there’s another reason beyond my love for the classic characters that I think this obsession with doing “New” things is idiotic.  THEY AREN’T DOING ANYTHING NEW.  Miles Morales, for all the phenomenal writing in the world, is the EXACT same character as Peter Parker.  He’s shy, intelligent, unsuccessfully witty, and has Peter’s Guilt Complex.  He’s more of a clone than Scarlet Spider was!

I’ll give you a little tip on replacing a character.  When you replace a character, you do it by replacing them with someone DIFFERENT who has had an actual HISTORY with said character.  Example?  How about that brief time that Dick Grayson took over as Batman?  Sure, the writing of the situation wasn’t the best.  Sure, he started acting like Bruce…BUT THAT MADE SENSE.  Miles Morales did not know Peter Parker in the least.  He DECIDED it was his fault that Peter died because “He could have done something”.  Allow me to remind you all that Captain America could have done something too.  Peter jumped in the path of the bullet that Cap could have saved him from.  They BOTH could have survived the incident.  But lazy writing triumphed and now all of the blame for Pete’s death in the world of the fans continues to fall on Cap instead of, I don’t know, THE LAZY WRITER.  I have friends who SPECIFICALLY say that they hate Cap JUST because in the stupid ultimate Universe, he failed to save Peter from a bullet that they could have BOTH been saved from.  Why is that stupid?  You can’t blame the CHARACTER for Lazy writing.  You blame the character when the writing makes sense and the INTENT is for them to catch the blame.

I do not know anything about the Superior Spider-Man and will remain as far away from that title as I can after I review the origin story issues.  I promise you, though, that I won’t care if the comic is written well or not.  Marvel’s already dead to me.

Here’s where it gets better.  They aren’t replacing characters for story purposes like they should be.  They’re doing it because they’re too lazy to TRY and think of anything new for him.  Replacing a character, without it being for story purposes, is a LAZY enterprise.  It’s completely and totally pointless.  Why?  BECAUSE YOU CAN USE THE TIME AND RESOURCES TO JUST MAKE A NEW ORIGINAL CHARACTER.  Allow me to ask you this, Marvel.  Why do you think replacing Peter Parker is the way to dispel your hate of him?  Better question.  WHY do you hate Peter Parker?  The Clone Saga, Sins Past, One More Day…you’ve been determined to tear down Peter Parker for years.  Why?  The crowning achievement was #692, where you made a comic that was supposed to be about Spider-Man…AND MADE IT ABOUT SOMEONE ELSE.  Points for making a new character…NEGATIVE points for using someone else’s comic to do it!  ESPECIALLY as a means to end Peter Parker.  AND, just to remind us how determined you are to erase Peter Parker for good, you ACTUALLY had the balls to throw in THE JACKAL.  That’s…that’s something else.

It’s funny.  Marvel and DC keep talking about how they’re trying to do something “New” and yet they aren’t.  They’re still busy cranking out the same old routine they have been for decades.  They’re not doing anything new.  They’re doing something quite old.  Promoting Shock titles in order to make money.  Marvel HATES Peter Parker.  But they know that Spider-Man is a money maker.  So what’s next, Marvel?  Killing off your entire mainstream Universe and replacing THEM with carbon copies that mean nothing?

And now my rage can turn to the fans who actively just happen to support all of this.  If you support it because you are genuinely interested in this direction, then that’s all well and good.  BUT, if you’re just supporting it because you’re a Marvel fan or a DC fan and you support anything they do, you’re an idiot.  A good fan is like a good parent.  We’re not Yes-Men.  We love our fandom like it’s our child.  But we HAVE to get on their case when they start doing questionable/undesirable things.  Otherwise idiocy will, in fact, continue.  I love Marvel and I love DC.  But I’m not going to let the lazy writing and dumb choices go on and make them force me to live with them.

Thus we come to the end of this article and a fair proposition.  I honestly do not believe anyone from Marvel or DC will see this…or care about it if they do happen to see it.  But here’s a thought.  You made a Universe to a appeal to a newer audience, Marvel.  DC, that’s what you’re CURRENTLY doing and have been TRYING to do for decades. These Universes made money like no tomorrow.  So why don’t you just make ANOTHER Universe for us traditionalists.  Classic Characters told with classic stories, all written by people who care more about the content they’re feeding people than they do their next pay check.  Writers and Artists and so-on that will actually treat these characters and properties like their children and write them like they care.  In fact, in a play on of words from your past, you can even call it the Marvel Age Universe.  DC, you can call yours The Golden Age Universe or something.  Yes, I know there are old comics we can buy.  Who says you can’t just tell stories in a classic way and just bring in new stories?  Why does it have to be the same old stories told to fit new times?  Personally, that idea doesn’t appeal to me.  If you happen to disagree with me, that’s all well and good, but at least understand where I’m coming from here.  The Ultimate Universe fans don’t have to quit with their precious Ultimate Universe and the 616 (It’s becoming inappropriate to call it the Mainstream continuity considering the Ultimate U’s popularity) fans can keep their theirs.  But Marvel and DC, this is my idea.  Make individual universes for us traditionalists.  Same characters.  Same properties.  New stories.  Not working about money or “Modern Day Marketability”.

(A Disclaimer: I love The Amazing Spider-Man movie and The Avengers not because of their accuracy to the stories and their environments.  I love them because of their accuracy to the CHARACTERS.)

Write-Up: The Amazing Spider-Man

I’ve given my full review of this summer’s “The Amazing Spider-Man” and if you recall that review, then you know my personal rating.  I fully believe that for me it lived up to its name and is, by almost every stretch of the word, amazing.  It is not a cinematic masterpiece at all but, then again, that’s relative since there is no such thing (What, with clashing opinions and all).  So, without further ado, the full review of The Amazing Spider-Man review.

To start off, a lot of this review is going to simply expand on things I said within the Silver Screen Cinema episode.


If you read the comics (specifically the much older ones) and pay as close attention to them as I do, then you know whether or not these characters were written in well.  Were they?  For the most part, yes.

Peter Parker/Spider-Man did come across as the super smart, geeky, shy, and all around nobody that he is supposed to.  His character isn’t too heavy or anything for what is admittedly a much darker movie (at least in comparison to the original Raimi film).  After he becomes Spider-Man he has what the Raimi movies lacked.  While as a movie, itself, the original film had a lot of cute, quirky, and memorable moments, I felt that it lacked the real essence of Spider-Man and felt like Tobey acting.  He didn’t strike me as the infamous Web Head.  Here?  Spider-Man has that classic Spidey wit that everyone who loves the character loves about him.  Not only that, they actually use the Super Genius angle in this movie a lot more than the old one and the movie feels like it’s much more about the boy behind the mask than the mask itself.  The original movie had its moments but overall I felt like the mask dominated the movie.

Gwen Stacy is a character who, as I said, I was surprised by.  The reason is because I’ve read that they apparently took more inspirations for this movie from the Marvel Ultimate Universe.  I can’t tell you how much a loathe the Ultimate Universe.  One of the aspects of it I loathe is its ability to take any of my favorite characters and just WARP them.  Gwen Stacy was no exception.  HOWEVER, I was delighted to see that they used her Marvel 616 version more so than the Ultimate one.  She’s was geeky, she was clever, and she was sweet.  Would you like to know something else?  As much as I like Spider-Man 2, tolerate Spider-Man 1 and…ignore Spider-Man 3, I have to acknowledge that my least favorite part of all three movies is Mary Jane.  Why?  Because…she was utterly useless.  I like Mary Jane’s comic interpretations.  Why?  Because she’s TOUGH.  Mary Jane in the Raimi movies kept getting kidnapped and didn’t bother TRYING to fight back.  Gwen never particularly had as much of a spine in the comics as MJ though I admittedly like Gwen more because she’s a geek.  However, you’d better believe she doesn’t let that stop her.  She’s not charging head-first into battle throughout this movie but she TRIES.  She was a very lovable character just as much on screen as she was on the pages of the classic comics.

Captain Stacy is a character who I want to talk about as little as possible because he serves all of one purpose in this movie.  But that purpose is hugely important and also gives way to HEAVY spoilers.  So I’ll just skim over this one.  Captain Stacy is excellently played by Denis Leary as the tough, overprotective, but also caring father.  He’s also wise enough to straighten Pete up when he steps out of line and actually acts as something of a Father Figure for Peter at times.

Doctor Connors/The Lizard is where the characters are most lacking.  That isn’t too say he’s poorly done.  He isn’t.  But he doesn’t have an immense amount of depth.  I don’t think I’ll be spoiling anything by saying something ISN’T in the movie so I’ll say that the most pivotal aspect of the character, Dr. Connors’s family, is left out of the movie aside from a throwaway line.  That one little aspect would have given him so much more depth.  In the comics, his Obsession with this drug that transforms him is rivaled only by his love of his wife and son.  No wife and son here so the ultimate result of things turns out to be a rather sloppily thrown together execution in this departments.


The acting was fine if not great all around the board, honestly.  No one really missed a beat here.  Maybe a little cliche when it comes to The Lizard but that aside it was handled well.

Character Chemistry

The highlights of Character Chemistry in this movies go, not only to Peter/Gwen and Peter/Captain Stacy, but also to Peter/Uncle Ben.  If you go back and watch the original film, you’ll notice that the uncle been in that movie has all of about 10 minutes of screen time before he’s kill (Off screen, mind you).  Here?  He’s still around for about 40 minutes of the movie and you actually SEE it happen.  As Peter and his Uncle interact, you feel the relationship much more.  I’m not even sure Peter shared more than three lines with Uncle Ben in the original film.  Because you spend more time getting to know Uncle Ben and getting to understand how close Uncle Ben is to Peter, you actually FEEL for Peter when his uncle gets shot and you feel the gravity of the situation a lot more heavily.  It allows you to better understand the guilt complex that is such a HUGE part of the Spider-Man character.

Effects & Action

The action scenes of this movie, are almost all perfectly handled.  The effects don’t make the fights look like CGI versus CGI until maybe the last stretch of the movie.  Some people complained that the fight scenes weren’t as huge and epic as they should have been but that’s the problem.  Spider-Man isn’t a huge and epic character on his own.  At the end f the day, Spider-Man is just a street level superhero who occasionally has super villains after him and even then, his Super Villains aren’t villains like Dr. Doom.  They’re just massively dangerous criminals like Shocker or Rhino.  The contained nature of the fights fit with a Spider-Man movie.  Even in the flawless fight scene atop the elevated Train in Spider-Man 2, the fight itself was very contained.  They weren’t juggling one another around the entire city and destroying virtually everything in sight.  None of these fight scenes are really as impressive as that one but they’re pretty good to me at least.


I’ll admit that the movie isn’t perfect and the writing COULD have used work in a few areas.  To name a few general spaces where the writing was a bit “meh” The Lizard’s general write-up was just okay at best and there were a few things dropped from the movie.  I know they’ll tackle some of these things in the sequel but some things really should have just been in this one.

In the same vein is the Story.  The story was great excluding the Lizard bits which were just okay and I feel that this is because, again, they didn’t make him a complex enough villain.


Here is where we finally begin to enter possible Spoiler Territory.  You can skip this section if you don’t want to know ANYTHING.

Overall, this movie did WONDERS as an Adaptation in comparison to the original film.  The characters were almost PERFECTLY in tact with their comic counterparts.  My only real complaints in that department are Gwen and Lizard.  While I did enjoy them both overall, there was one aspect of both that I had slight problems with.  For one thing, Gwen actually knows that Peter is Spider-Man.  Now this might be something more in line with the Ultimate Universe but in the main 616 continuity, Gwen NEVER learned it.  It’s not just like a Mary Jane deal where she did learn it, she just didn’t learn it at the right time in the movie, Gwen isn’t supposed to learn his secret at all.  Gwen is supposed to pretty exclusively be Peter’s girlfriend, not Spider-Man’s (If that makes sense).  The Spectacular Spider-Man cartoon is a good example.  Gwen was Peter’s friend for a good while and even still, she never found out.  Too bad that show was cancelled, by the way.

As for Lizard, this one is less of an adaptation problem and more of a personal thing.  Lizard was, in essence, adapted perfectly well.  I just didn’t care as much for the VERSION of him that they chose to adapt.  I prefer the Lizard as a villain when he’s purely feral.  The combination of the Feral Lizard and him having his family in this movie would have made the Lizard a much more complex character.  Even if he couldn’t exactly think on a rational level.


The movie was cut HEAVILY.  I mean by around 40+ minutes.  I feel like those cut bits contained some really good, interesting stuff.  But I know that the reason some of it was cut was because it revealed too much about Peter’s parents and they wanted to save some for the next movie.  No real problem with that.  My problem with it is that it makes the movie seem shorter.  I didn’t feel like I was watching a full movie.  It felt like only an hour or so had passed as if I was watching a TV movie or something of that nature.  I think that the movie could actually stand to be just a little bit longer but, hey, that’s just me.
